James 4:1-2 shows us that people war without as a result of a lack of peace within, and I have found that this is especially true in marriage.
James 4:1-2
James 4:1-2 says:
“From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.”
If you will notice, the scriptures are teaching us that when a person is constantly fighting without, it is a sure sign that they have failed to win the battle within for peace and contentment.
Looking for Something that Does not Exist
The problem with some is not that they fail to find what they are looking for as much as they look for something that does not exist. This is why many are failing in their marriages today in that they are looking to marriage alone as a source of happiness.
Ultimately, only God can fulfill the need for happiness in our lives (Psalm 144:15). Marriage is simply a fringe benefit to the happiness God should already be supplying.
This is why we concentrate so much on the happiness factor in chapter 1 of our new marriage book. This is because it is happy spouses that make up a happy marriage rather than a happy marriage being what makes a happy spouse.
