Don’t Just Pray, Obey for Your Marriage

If married couples want the blessings of God, they should also be careful to walk in a way that is pleasing to Him. The Bible is clear that if couples desire His blessings, they should also be sure to understand the importance of obedience to God in marriage.

What Does the Bible Say?

If you are going to plead for God’s help for your marriage, then you should also understand the importance of walking in His precepts. In I John 3:22-23, the Bible says:

“And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.”

Are You in a Blessable Position?

John tells us that if we are going to call upon the Lord for help, then we should also be careful to walk in His ways. Clearly, it is not enough to say, “God bless me.”. It is also of utmost importance that we be in a what I call a bless-able position.

All that being said, I have found that men and women alike have a propensity to claim the promises of God concerning their marriage yet neglect His commands when it comes to dealing with their spouse. The two must go hand in hand. In reality, we might as well be holding a lucky charm or clinging to a rabbit’s foot if we are going to have such an approach.

What the Bible Says in Proverbs 28:9

Proverbs 28:9 tells us the following:

“He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.”

The Bible is rather emphatic in this verse in that it is teaching us that prayers without obedience are abhorred by God. Clearly, this is another verse teaching us how important it is for spouses to comprehend the necessity of obedience to God in marriage.

Couples calling on the Lord for help should be careful to read and study His Word. They should also be careful to apply that which they are learning. Take a look at our other articles to learn how to specifically walk in obedience to God in your marriage.
