Glorifying God through Marriage

Glorifying God Through Marriage

The concept of glorifying God through marriage seems to be lost in our pursuit of having happier marriages. Here is another little blurp out of our book on marriage that deals with glorifying God through marriage.

The Purpose of Obedience to God

In much of the book of Deuteronomy, the Lord is commanding His people what to do once they enter into the land of Canaan. In Deuteronomy 4, however, God is not teaching His people what to do as much as why they should submit to His ways. Below is a snippet from Deuteronomy 4:

“5  Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.

6  Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

7  For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

8  And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?”

In short, God knew that other nations that did not know Him were going to be observing the Israelites once they settled in the land of Canaan.  As they beheld their works, He wanted them to come to one primary conclusion:  What a great God is the God of the Israelites!

Though others may disagree with our theology and our life choices as they relate to scripture, they should not be able to argue with the results of serving the Lord.

A Great Opportunity

Proverbs 13:15 says that “the way of transgressors is hard”, yet Proverbs 3:17 states that Biblical wisdom leads us into “ways of pleasantness”.  In a day when some say that the divorce rate is as high as fifty percent, God’s people have a unique opportunity to display that His ways yield better results.

I believe it was Amy Carmichael who said that bright lights were not made for sunny rooms, but for dark places.  That being the case, God’s people are in a great position to shine the results of His ways in this very dark world in which we live. We are in a wonderful position to lead others to have to say, “What a great God is the God of the church!”.

The idea of glorifying God through marriage may not be at the forefront of your mind if you are having marital issues. But, it should be noted, when couples make it their primary goal to glorify God rather than find happiness, they will find more emotional stamina to persevere.
