Proverbs 13:10 tells us the following:
“Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.”
The scriptures make it abundantly clear that pride is the ultimate killer of relationships. Though some may bristle with this idea, we may need to ask ourselves a few questions to see if that sleeping lion called pride is lurking in our marriage:
Do you have to win an argument or are you more concerned with solving a problem?
Do you struggle with admitting that you are wrong all the while having no difficulties pointing out problems with your spouse?
Are you afraid of looking at the raw facts of a situation because it may make you look bad?
Are you more concerned with who gets the credit in the marriage or are you simply happy that goals are accomplished?
Do you feel the need to put others down in the home or marriage so that you will look better?
Do you have a critical spirit toward your spouse?
Would you have a hard time seeking outside help about your marital issues or are you more concerned with looking bad?
Keep in mind that though humility looks and feels weak, it is the strongest foundation upon which God can build. Also, if husbands and wives want a marriage relationship that is blessed by the Lord, humility will have to be a key ingredient as “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble”. (James 4:6)
